As a doctorate student, the object of study is Identity and Work. I've been investigating and working on my "thesis to be" and recently I read a book by Richard Sennett entitled The Corrosion of Character - Personal Consequences of Work in the New Capitalism.
The book is a crucial and critical view of work and the work concept in today's world. As an employee or employer or social thinker, the book gives you some deep and disturbing insights about the consequences of work in the new capitalism, as the title so cites.
So, going to the point, in his book, Sennett draws conclusions from stories and anectodes he collected in order to explain the work concept in today's economy / society.
Throughout the book, Sennett points out some deep and disturbing contradictions between values and practices and the consequences of such gaps.
One of the aspects that Sennett points out is flexibility. Theoretically a concept that is associated with freedom at work, a new concept in today's economic and labour context, and a new mindset for today's worker.
However, the contradiction lies in fact that, flexibility, instead for giving and creating opportunity for freedom greater autonomy and responsibilty, is instead a new way of oppresion and control of the worker.
Such dissension between values / speech and practice, according to the author, is the bedrock of the bewilderment shown by today's workforce.
Nevertheless, however irksome this reality may seem, Sennett presents some anectodes that illlustrate how this power structure is put in place, using the technological resources such as phone, e-mails, etc. to confrim that the person is effectively woking. Instead of putting a real focus on results, independently of how and when the work is produced.
What motivates this post is a simple one, is today's identity and identity concept based on such incongruences? In other words, the newer generation is growing up in this "new economy", therefore, living closely with such incongruences. Does this familiarity and closeness with this reality imply a new identity for the future generations?
The corrosion of the character, as a consequence of the discrepancies between today's work values/udeologies and practices, apply to future generations, considering that the only reality they will know is this one?

TIENES UNA OPINION?
Despues de leer un articulo sobre una pareja gay en Malawi, que ahora pasa por apuros con la ley por el simple hecho de serlo. Decidí colgar esta pequeña reflexión sobre la homosexualidad. No es sorprendente que de acuerdo con el contexto cultural y geográfico y, más que eso, la forma de pensar de las personas, la homosexualidad sea tratada de distinta forma.La Europa Occidental ha sido históricamente más tolerante hacia la homosexualidad. Data de 1791 cuando Francia permitió que parejas homosexuales se relacionasen libremente sin sanciones legales. Además, en la Grecia y Roma antiguas, los homosexuales se relaconaban libremente en la sociedad. Solamente cuando el Catolicismo se covirtió en la religión oficial del Imperio Romano las cosas cambiaron. Asi, me gustaría dejarte con alguna inquietud acerca de este pensamiento sobre esta pareja gay de Malawi y sobre la homosexualidad en términos mas genéricos.
Creo que este pequeño articulo sirve como un termómetro o un marco referencial para que podamos reflexionar sobre lo mucho que hemos avanzado, culturalmente y personamente, hacia la tolerancia a la homosexualidad y movimientos gays.
Una de las mayores luchas del movimento gay, que se remonta a finales de los años 60 e inicio de los 70, era que la asociación psiquiátrica Americana y Europea dejase de considerar la homosexualidad como un disturbio mental.
Suecia hizo una protesta sui generis en 1979, cuando las personas llamaban al trabajo y que no podian ir ese dia porque estaban enfermas, y cuando consultadas lo que tenian, la respuesta era que tenian homosexualidad. Ridicula protesta o no, llevó a la retirada de la homosexualidad del listado y clasificación de disturbios mentales en el mismo año. En los EEUU, esta batalla fue ganada seis años antes, en 1973 . - Esta parece ser la batalla más fácil que han ganado desde el comienzo del movimento gay Americano en 1924.
¿ Se acuerdan de la conmoción acalorada, que Bill Clinton tuvo que afrontar solamente, porque tenia dicho abiertamente que estaba a favor de la admisión de homosexuales en el servicio militar?. La paradoja es que los EEUU, como dice su himno, la tierra de los libres y hogar de los valientes, que han luchado por libertades de todo tipo, realmente exageran su reacción a tal tema, y como término medio, el decreto DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell / no preguntes y no digas) fue aprobado en el congreso (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/10/654.html).
Como resultado, los homosexuales fueron admitidos en el servicio militar, pero tienen que esconder y no revelar su orientación sexual. Bueno, quizás el silencio sea una forma de revelación,
¿ verdad? Y, ¿ cuánto han caminado los Amercianos hacia la tolerancia gay?¿ Será que los gays son menos patriotas y menos dispuestos a luchar por su patria?¿ Son peores soldados por el simple hecho de ser gays?
Paises como Cuba, China, Egypt, Iran, Jamaica, las Koreas del Norte y del Sur , Pakistan, Arabia Saudita, Serbia, Singapure, Syria, Turkey, Venezuela, Yemen... no permiten homosexuales en el servicio militar, y Russia solamente permite a los gays servir en tiempos de guerra bajo condiciones especiales. El listado de paises que permiten a los gays servir en el servicio militar es mas amplia, incluyendo 20 de los 26 miembros de la NATO .
Me acuerdo en 2005, cuando estaba en los EEUU, volviendo a casa con mi hermano, escuchabamos una emisora de Radio Pública donde informaban que la iglesia Católica consideraba admitir curas gays bajo circunstancias especiales. Tales circunstancias no fueron explicadas, pero seguramente me intrigaron. Primero y ante todo, creía que los curas hacian los votos de castidad. Al escuchar el reportaje, fui a comprobar si estaba equivocada en lo que era el significado de la palabra castidad, porque una relación sexual es una relación homosexual, ¿ o no? Entonces, significaría eso que la iglesia Católica tenía dado una pequeña tregua a su rigidez hacia la castidad de sus curas? Y porqué, esta tolerancia hacia la castidad solo se aplica a los curas gays?
Bien... eso me ocurrió y no quise eliminarlo de mi blog.

I decided to post an article about homosexuality. It comes as no surprise that according to the cultural and geographic setting and, moreover, according to the mindset of the people, homosexuality receives different treatments. Western Europe has historically been more tolerant towards homosexuality. Going back to 1791 when France allowed gay and lesbian relations without discrimination or legal sanctions. Aside this, in Ancient Greece and Rome, homosexuals were allowed to relate freely in society. Only when Catholicism became the official religion of the Roman Empire did things change.
So, I decided to leave you with some food for thought about a gay couple in Malawi. I think this article serves as a thermometer or a reference point for reflection on how far we have come, culturally and as individuals, towards gay tolerance and gay rights. One of the gay movements' main fights back in the late 60's early 70's was that the Psychiatric Association stopped considering , homosexuality as a mental disorder. With Sweden's unique protest in 1979, when many people called in sick, stating that they were homosexual, so they couldn't go to work, leading to the removal of homosexuality as a mental disorder. In the US, this battle was won 6 years earlier, in 1973 . - That seems to have been the easiest battle the american gay rights movement won since they began back in 1924.
Do you remember the heated uproar that Bill Clinton had to face because he was in favor of admitting gays in the military service? Now, the US , the land of the free and the home of the brave, allowing liberties of all sorts, actually (over)reacted to such an issue, and as a compromise the DADT bill (Don't Ask Don't Tell) was passed (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/10/654.html). As a result, homosexuals were admitted in the military, but they have to be closeted and not reveal their sexual orientation. Well, silence just might be a way o getting it out in the open? Now, how far are Americans towards gay tolerance? Are gay less patriotric? Are they worse soldiers just for the mere fact that they are gays?
Countries such as Cuba, China, Egypt, Iran, Jamaica, North and South Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Syria, Turkey, Venezuela, Yemen... and Russia only allows gays to serve during wartime. The list of countries that do allow gays to serve in the military is much wider, including 20 of the 26 NATO members.
I remember in 2005 when I was in the US, on our way back home my brother and I were listening to a public radio station and they were reporting that the Catholic church was considering admitting gay priests under special circumstances. Such circumstances were not explained, but they surely intrigued me. First and foremost because I thought priests were celibates. Having heard that report, actually made me go and double check the meaning of celibacy, because sexual act is a sexual act, homosexual or not. So, did that mean that the Catholic Church breached a little on its rigidity towards the subject of priests' sexual acts? Why does this tolerance only apply to homosexuals?
Well... that just came to mind as I was writing, but I didn't want to eliminate it from my blog.

Um ano novo. Uma nova fatia do tempo para marcar nosso viver!
Começo o ano cheia de optimismo e de esperanças, montes de projectos para realizar, cheia de energia e tive os melhores e maiores presentes que uma pessoa pode ter. Estive rodeada de amigos, novos e velhos, todos estiveram presentes de uma maneira ou de outra. Sinal, que faço algumas coisas certas. : ))
Espero que este 2010 renove as esperanças de todos, que fortaleça a nossa magia, que traga novos sonhos.

MERCADO DA PRAIA
Ha muito tempo estava em missao de serviço na cidade da Praia, e nao tinha nada que fazer numa manha em que morfeu me abandonou muito cedo. Como viajava naquela tarde, resolvi ir ao mercado para ver o que comprava para levar para a minha ilha do Sal.Ainda o mercado estava fechado, entao pus a dar umas voltas e parei para ver os carros que vinham do interior com uma mistura de gente, carnes, embutidos, doces, legumes, peixes, ervas - tudo que estaria no mercado naquele dia.Nesse farfalhar de gente e de mercadorias foi quando dei conta que a maioria das pessoas que vendem no mercado da praia sao mulheres.Mulheres de todos os tamanhos, idades, posturas, algumas gravidas, outras mais parecem estar 10 meses gravidas, enfim, uma força humana fantastica, sem duvida. A uma certa altura a curiosidade foi mais forte que eu e desatei a perguntar äquelas mulheres onde estao os maridos? Uma dessas mulheres com uma barriga que parecia que a criança nasceria naquele dia respondeu-me "m ta spera kel sta na inferno". Nao podia ter resposta mais chocante que essa num amanhecer, pois ali nao eram meras palavras, mas muita dor retida, muita paixao nao dada, muita raiva por explodir e, nao sei se minha natureza feminina ou meu simples ser humano ou se por ser psicóloga, vendo tudo isso, só me ocorreu retrucar "pamodi?" e entao vem uma historia fantastica de duas pessoas que se conheceram, se divertiram no calor da noite e da vida, se amaram, sonharam e deixaram uma vida porvir. Mas... ou por medo ou por irresponsabilidade ou por dó, o homem desapareceu, deixando a mulher com uma barriga pesada carregando seus tomates todos os dias para garantir mais um dia.Quase todas essas mulheres tinham varios filhos a espera no fim de um dia, outras tinham os varios filhos com mais varios filhos e outras varios filhos mais varios filhos dos outros... enfim, muita gente por detras de uma mulher.E esse unico dia e esse monte de mulheres anonimas nunca mais sairam da minha cabeça e nem podem sair!Alguns dias acho bonito toda essa força, esse viver, outros dias sinto a furia delas com as traiçoes da vida, dos maridos e amantes, dos filhos e da propria natureza feminina e em outros sinto a tristeza dos sonhos partidos das esperanças engasgadas, das lagrimas salgadas. Seja como for, as mulheres que vi e que sei que estao por ali, mudaram meu pensar e sentir para sempre.Nao sei se devo agradecer ou se devo lamentar, mas foi um instante que mudou meu viver ate o ultimo dia que estiver lucida o suficiente para ser eu mesma - Carla Estrela, mulher, com sonhos e esperanças tambem.
